Useful information

We have 2 swimming course sessions per semester. Swimming lessons are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The days and times of the courses may vary depending on demand. Therefore, we reserve the right to make changes.

In the curriculum, specific objectives are outlined for the school’s education to be achieved by the fifth and ninth grades, respectively. As of September 1, 2007, clearer goals have been established regarding the expected accomplishments of students.

By the end of the fifth school year, all students should:

  • Have developed water confidence, feel secure in water, swim 200 meters (including 50 meters on their back), and be capable of handling water-related emergencies. Additionally, they should possess fundamental knowledge of swimming safety, boating safety, and ice safety.

By the end of the ninth school year, all students should be proficient in managing water-related emergencies and have knowledge of life-saving first aid.

Swedish Lifesaving Society’s Response Regarding Swimming Instruction in Small Pools:

Swimming lessons at Storkyrkobadet:

In response to your inquiry regarding the suitability of conducting swimming instruction in smaller pools compared to standard dimensions, we offer the following insights:

At the Swedish Lifesaving Society, drawing from our extensive experience and expertise in swimming instruction, we have consistently received positive feedback from swimming lessons held in smaller pools. We wish to underscore the following key points:

  • Highly effective for swimming instruction, particularly for children and small groups of young and adult learners.
  • Enhanced safety as instructors have excellent visibility over all participants.
  • Psychologically and pedagogically beneficial, especially for children overcoming water-related fears.
  • Facilitates focused and intimate learning environments for both instructors and participants.
  • Minimizes disruptions from other bathers, fostering a sense of security.
  • It is essential that teaching pool depths are appropriate for learners, ensuring effective skill assessment, such as a 200-meter swim test with 50 meters on the back.

Through collaboration with the Swedish Pool Industry, we advocate for the development of more small, purpose-built swimming pools akin to those at Storkyrkobadet. This approach addresses the pressing need for increased swimming facilities to promote water safety and proficiency, particularly in urban areas like Stockholm.

Together, we aim to encourage municipalities to prioritize the construction of instruction-friendly swimming pools to meet the demand for comprehensive swimming education and ultimately achieve universal swimming proficiency.
